The History of Bahia Palace
Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman the Grand Sultan of Morocco started construction on the Bahia Palace in 1859, completing the project in 1860.
After he passed his son and successor Ahmed bin Mūsa expanded the palace further, as the land surrounding the existing structure became available for purchase.
The palace’s expansion took over a large portion of the Northern neighbourhood, changing the existing city layout and roadways of the medina.
The vast number of rooms in the Bahia Palace not only housed Ahmed bin Mūsa and his family, but also his servants, slaves, and concubines.
Due to Ba Ahmed’s poor health, it is suggested that the palace was only allowed one floor, to allow for easy access and movement.
Additional floors were added in 1908 when Madani el-Glaoui took control of the property.
Over time and through various leadership, the palace housed royalty, foreign visitors, and important political figures, until it was eventually handed over to the Moroccan Ministry of Culture.
This was when Bahia Palace was converted into a cultural heritage site, allowing visitors to explore the grounds and learn of its rich history.
